Toward the end of last year an epidemic of Aussie flu broke out in the UK. There have been several outbreaks worldwide, threatening the lives of the most vulnerable, especially pregnant women, children and the elderly, so, when I found out that I had it I was somewhat shocked because normally I just don't do ill.
Initially, I had no idea what was wrong with me, but as soon as my husband saw me in the evening, his first words were 'you've got a good dose of the flu'.
In this article, I thought I'd share my experience with you, the symptoms to expect, my thoughts on flu vaccines and how to heal quickly should you get sick. My hope for you should you get it, is to get over this nasty virus as soon as you possibly can.
My Aussie Flu Experience
On the first day, my symptoms were so bad that my husband was advised by the NHS Helpline to call the paramedics to rule out other causes. They arrived two hours later apologising for the delay. They had been inundated with extra visits all day because of this new strain of flu. After an ECG, and a few tests later, cleared of any underlying problems I was politely informed I had the Aussie flu.
I have never had anything like this so this was completely new to me. After a couple of days resting and feeling a little more myself, I decided to do some research. Surprisingly, I found plenty of information about regular flu strains, but nothing consistent about the Aussie variety.
The articles that I did find had no real information, guidance was limited, and most said symptoms were the same as regular flu. How could this be when my symptoms were so different?
I came to the conclusion that because it was a fairly new strain people wouldn't know much about it.
My symptoms weren't an isolated case, I found out that some of my friends fell ill with it, and friends of friends all having the same symptoms as myself.

Aussie Flu Symptoms
My Symptoms Included:
Looking back, I realised for a couple of weeks prior I felt a little drained, often feeling spaced out and light headed. I had an inability to concentrate, focus and engage with people. But because it was infrequent, I didn't think too much about it.
The day that it hit me it happened quite suddenly. I woke up fine, but as the morning progressed I began feeling slightly nauseous. It was about 11 am when I started to shake from head to toe and felt very cold inside. I completely lost my appetite and drank water like there was no tomorrow. About 1 pm I developed a very bad headache so I decided to take some paracetamol, and within twenty minutes I was feeling a little more normal.
As 3 pm approached I tried taking a nap, but my mind was racing so I decided to take a walk for some fresh air. This wasn't the best decision because as I made my way down the street, I started to feel confused, my heart raced like crazy, I was disoriented and dizzy so I did a sharp 180 and headed for home.
At around 5 pm I sat in my kitchen with my daughters feeling so spaced out, I didn't know what I was doing or saying. My husband arrived home shortly after and tried talking to me, but I wasn't really responding to anything. He laid me down and was persuaded by the NHS Helpline to have a paramedic visit due to my confusion. He gave some paracetamol which seemed to calm things down a little, but even he admitted later that he was very worried by my confusion and inability to focus or understand anything.
Symptoms in short:
- Inability to concentrate
- Breathing difficulties
- Tight chest
- Slight sore throat
- Unable to focus and engage
- Loss of appetite
- Cold and shaking
- Headache or even migraine
- Prickly skin
- Aching back and legs
- Blurry vision
- Racing heart
- Very sleepy
- Intermittent nausea
Although I got progressively better as each day went by, it lasted about six days, and by day 7, I was feeling comparatively well. Paracetamol helped me tremendously, but I believe my recovery was quicker because of my general good health and my supplementation routine.
Flu Vaccine Myth
Flu vaccines are reputed to contain heavy toxins and carcinogenic agents, and any preventative measures included are generally previous years strains.
Toxins included are:
- Neomycin and gentamycin. These are essentially useless and contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant superbugs and cause beneficial bacteria that are essential to gut health and immune system strength to die off.
- Glyphosate is a toxic herbicide and is found in weedkiller, it is linked to diseases such as autism, IBD and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
- Mercury, aluminium, formaldehyde, carbolic acid, the disinfectant beta-propiolactone, and ethylene glycol, otherwise known as antifreeze.
Is there anything good about the flu vaccine?
Nope, it's widely known that if you have a flu shot then your Dr. will inform you that you will experience flu symptoms within a couple of days that will last two to three days.
Humm, but if you don't have the flu shot (remember its last year's strain) and you get the flu virus (this year's strain) it will last for five to six days.
Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine Specialists have reported that kids who have the flu shot, are no less likely to get it than those choosing not to, despite an increase in people having the flu vaccination, and when scientists develop next years "flu vaccine", it's largely based on guesswork, and hoping for the best.
How To Heal Quickly
If flu vaccines aren't the answer then what's the key to preventing the flu, limiting its symptoms if you get it, and reducing recovery time? Answer: build up your immune system!

My Conclusion to the Aussie Flu
As the saying goes prevention is the better cure. There is so much truth in this, and the way to go about it is not to wait until you're sick to cure yourself, but take care of your body before getting sick. That way you've more of a fighting chance to recover quickly or even totally eliminate illness before it starts.
